John M. Schmitt

John M. Schmitt, a director of real estate for the Rite Aid Corp., died of a heart attack Saturday while playing golf at the Hunt Valley Golf Club, where he had been a member for 20 years.

A memorial service for Mr. Schmitt, who was 51 and a resident of Sparks, will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. James Episcopal Church, 3100 Monkton Road.

A native of New Hartford, N.Y., he attended Texas Christian University and graduated from Syracuse University in 1962 with a degree in political science. While attending Syracuse, he had been the Eastern Intercollegiate conference golf champion.

After college, he served in the Army from 1962 to 1964.

Mr. Schmitt spent his entire career in commercial real estate, working primarily for the Rite Aid Corp. and for the Area Development Corp. in Richmond, Va.

is survived by his wife, Margaret Drake Schmitt; a daughter, Heidi E. Schmitt; and a son, Jonathan M. Schmitt, all of Sparks; his father, William A. Schmitt of New Hartford; and several nephews and nieces.

The family suggested memorial contributions could be made to the John MacFarlane Schmitt Memorial Scholarship Fund, Sparks State Bank, 14804 York Road, Sparks 21152.
