Soliman takes last two holes to win WGA championship by 3 BHC hbB

August 08, 1991

Pam Soliman of Eagle's Nest used a par-birdie finish for a 1-over-par 74 and a 36-hole total of 151 to wrap up the 47th Women's Golf Association championship at the Elkridge Club yesterday.

In winning her first major title, Soliman, 18, finished three shots in front of Andrea Kraus of Woodholme Country Club, 77-77154.

Soliman, the second-youngest champion in tournament history (Beth Hughes was 17 when she won in 1973), played the second round with Kraus, the current Metropolitan champion, and with whom she began the day tied for the lead at 77.

Never behind, Soliman built a two-stroke margin by the turn, lost a stroke at No. 10, and fell into a tie after a three-putt bogey at No. 16. Kraus promptly flew the green with an 8-iron shot at the 134-yard 17th and, in her opinion, "was lucky to get down in 4." A two-putt par pushed Soliman ahead.

Kraus, feeling she had to make birdie at the 465-yard finishing hole after both reached the green in three, saw her breaking 25-putt miss the cup. "I had to go for it," she said. She wound up three-putting for a bogey.

"I was on the same line from 20 feet," said Soliman of her putt, which broke into the hole for a birdie.

Connie Pifer of Hunt Valley Golf Club wound up third on 78-80158, followed by two-time champion Cindy Peterka of Sparrows Point CC, 82-79161, and six-time titlist Bonnie Fry of Maryland Golf, 83-80163.

Linda Hickman of Chartwell CC earned the Seniors championship with 83-88171.
