Estes wins MAPGA Assistants title

RICHMOND, Va. -- Jim Estes of Bonnie View Country Club in Baltimore withstood a course-record 7-under-par 64 by Jack Skilling of Columbia CC in Chevy Chase, Md., to win the annual Middle Atlantic PGA Assistants championship at Rivers Bend CC yesterday. Estes, who had a course-record 64 at Brandermill CC in Monday's first round, finished with a 70 for 134. Skilling had 73-64137, where he was tied by 1989 champion Mike West, 70-67.

WGA championship

Andrea Kraus and Pam Soliman put up 4-over-par 77s to share the lead halfway through the 52nd annual Women's Golf Association championship at the Elkridge Club. Connie Pifer, at 78, was the only other player to break 80 among the 61 starters.

Kraus, the current Metropolitan champion, had the best nine, an outgoing 2-under-par 35 with three birdies, then went 4 over on the last four holes. Soliman, 18, had a double bogey on each nine, but offset the first one with two birdies.

Pifer started bogey, double-bogey, turned 4 over, then played the back nine in par-37.

U.S. Women's Amateur

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Sarah LeBrun Ingram, a former Owings Mills resident, carded a second successive 2-over-par 74 and wound up fifth, four strokes behind on-site medalist Amy Fruhwirth of Phoenix (72-72144) in qualifying for the match-play portion of the 91st championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club.

The cut fell at 160 (11 in playoff for three places), and the only players from the Maryland sectional qualifier at Columbia CC in Chevy Chase to survive were Laree Sugg of Petersburg, Va. (75-77152), and Sheila Dagucon of Gaithersburg (80-79159). Playoff included Amy Schonauer, York, Pa., 81-79160; Margaret Young, Gladwyne, Pa., 82-78160; Liz Haines, Gladwyne, Pa., 82-78160.
