Andrea Leand's foot fault

Tennis player Andrea Leand of Brooklandville was on her way to play in the Players Challenge in Toronto yesterday when she stopped in the hotel lobby to make a telephone call. That proved to be a mistake.

"I was talking on the phone, and a cleaning lady who was vacuuming nearby accidentally pulled the cord, and the phone fell on my foot," Leand said.

Leand's foot immediately swelled, and she had to pull out of her first-round match against Magdalena Maleeva after losing the first set.

"I wish I could say I injured it doing something glamorous, like diving for a ball or something, " Leand said.

The quote

Art Modell, Cleveland Browns owner, predicting a winning season: "They'll rue the day they didn't put us on Monday Night Football."
