Proceeds of a June 2 benefit dance and mail donations added $17,100 to the Sgt. Ronald M. Randazzo Endowed Memorial Scholarship at Anne Arundel Community College, raising the total to $22,100.

The scholarship is eligible for the Maryland Private Donation Incentive Program, which matches every dollar donated by Maryland citizens.

Randazzo, of Glen Burnie, was one of seven Maryland soldiers killed in the Persian Gulf war. The scholarship will benefit one Glen Burnie High School graduate each academic year who demonstrates financial need and enrolls full time in the college's law enforcement and criminal justice program. The North County branch library, at 1010 Eastway across from Harundale Mall in Glen Burnie, will be closed Aug. 11 through Sept. 2 for the installation of new carpeting. The branch will reopen at 9 a.m. on Sept. 3.

No library materials will be due back to the branch while it is closed. However, North County patrons can return borrowed items through the book-drop, which is at the entrance facing Eastway and Ritchie Highway. Borrowers also may return materials to other branches.

It's library policy that materials can be returned to any branch in the county public library system, regardless of where they were borrowed.

In addition to the recarpeting, several areas of the collection will be moved while the branch is closed, said Branch Manager Jan Callison.

"We'll be moving and rearranging to make the layout more convenient and materials more accessible for people," said Callison.

The children's collection will be moved into what is currently the magazine area. What had been the children's area will house adult fiction, compact discs and other audio materials. Reference materials and magazines will be moved to the area vacated by adult fiction.

While the North County branch is closed, patrons who wish to borrow materials or use library information services are directed to the Severna Park branch, 7 miles away at 45 McKinsey Road off Ritchie Highway.

As of July 1, all county public library branches are closed Friday nights. The Severna Park and North County branches are open identical hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Other nearby branches are in Brooklyn Park, Linthicum and Riviera Beach.

The North County branch, which handles more than 46,000 visits each month, was last recarpeted in 1980. The branch received a new roof and ceiling in March. It is the second busiest library in the county, with an average monthly check-out rate of more than 60,000 items.

The Annapolis branch on West Street is the busiest in the system, with a monthly check-out rate of morethan 62,000.
