Pier Six concert canceled ZHC

August 06, 1991

A NIGHT on the Town," tonight's Pier Six concert featuring James Ingram and Patti Austin, has been canceled due to poor ticket sales, the Baltimore Center for the Performing Arts announced today. The concert also was to have featured George Howard, Keiko and Kazu Matsui, Alex Bugnon and Ricardo Silveira.

"Ticket sales were horrible," said Karen Ritgert, general manager of the Pier Six Concert Pavilion. She said John Wright, Pier Six facility manager, negotiated with the performers' managers all day yesterday about the possibility of lowering their fee, "but we just couldn't come to an agreement."

"We've had no movement all weekend," Wright said. "We've done everything we could, advertising with Patti LaBelle in town over the weekend and at Afram. James even came on stage with her Sunday night and we still didn't sell any more tickets.

"All we lose on the show is our deposit, which is half of the cost. That money was in the bank back in June."

Only 748 of the $25 (pavilion seats) and $19.50 (lawn seats) tickets were sold for the concert and "we needed to sell 3,000 to break even," Ritgert said.

Ritgert said negotiations broke off at 9 last night.

Refunds can be handled in person at the Pier Six box office or by mail by returning tickets to: Pier Six box office, 731 Eastern Ave., Baltimore, Md. 21202. Call 625-3100 with questions .
