VOLUNTEER news and needs:

FRANCISCAN Center, 2212 Maryland Ave., is an emergency outreach center where volunteers are urgently needed to help serve food and distribute clothing, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 467-5340.

College of Notre Dame has established a Host Family Program for international students. Volunteer host families are urgently needed. For complete details, call 532-3183.

Howard County Historical Society wants volunteers to conduct walking tours of Historic Ellicott City. Training will be provided. Call Bettina Jenkins, 366-1284 or 461-1050.

Governor's Office on Volunteerism has invited 150,000 Maryland volunteers to attend the Maryland State Fair in Timonium for an all-day celebration from noon to 9:30 p.m Aug. 25. On Aug. 24, the day the fair opens, as well as on Aug. 25, a volunteer marketplace will feature more than 100 Maryland volunteer organizations and programs for those interested in volunteering. University of Maryland Dental School wants volunteers, over age 18, to participate in a study of tartar build-up on teeth. Those who qualify will be in a group to test anti-tartar products and will receive free dental cleaning and $50. Screenings will be held through Friday in the AGD Clinic at the school, 666 W.
