The United States Yacht Racing Union will hold a one-day conference in Stamford, Conn., this fall that may be the start of something very good for cruising sailors and racers alike.
The conference, which will be held at the Sheraton Conference Center Hotel on Oct. 20, is designed to be a learning experience for sailors of all skill levels and will be separated into six course tracks developed for the program.
The tracks are: Advanced Safety at Sea; Basic Racing; Junior Fleet Racing; Advanced Racing Trim and Tactics; Performance Cruising; and Sailing Club/Event Management Round Table.
The cost of the symposium is $45 for non-USYRU members, $40 for USYRU members and $35 for junior sailors 18 and younger.

* DNR will hold a public meeting to discuss draft plans for bay management of American eel, Atlantic croaker and spot Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. The meeting will provide an opportunity for the public to ask questions and submit comments on the plans.
The meeting will be held at the Maryland Department of Agriculture Building, 50 Harry S. Truman Parkway in Annapolis.
* Two very good outdoors shows are coming up. On Aug. 10 and 11, the Call of the Wild Sportsman Hunting and Fishing Benefit Show will be held at the Frederick Fairgrounds, and on Sept. 29-29, the Deale Sportsmen Show will be held in Anne Arundel County.
At the benefit show in Frederick, fishing presentations include bass fishing tactics by pro Woo Daves, fishing the Potomac by guide Ken Penrod and fly fishing and fly tying by Jim Gilford.
The Frederick show opens at 9 a.m. both days, and all proceeds will be donated to children's charities. Admission to the show is $5 for adults. There is no admission charge for children 16 and younger.
The Deale show opens at 10 a.m. both days and will include competitions for goose calling, bow shooting, predator calling and turkey calling.
The Deale show will be held at the Deale Volunteer Fire Department in Anne Arundel County.
* Through Labor Day, Rocky Gap State Park will accept camping reservations seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The number to call is (301) 777-2138. . . . Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg has reduced its weekday entrance fees and boat rental charges through Labor Day. Entrance fees will be $2 for vehicles with Maryland tags, $3 for out-of-state vehicles. Rental fees for rowboats and canoes will be $7 per day during the week. Full rates will apply on Saturdays and Sundays. . . Jim Taylor of Cockeysville has won the 1992 Maryland Trout Stamp design contest held by the DNR. Taylor's painting of a rainbow trout, Gotcha, will be used on the license stamp required of Maryland trout fishermen.
