The Ryland Group Inc.

The Columbia-based homebuilder fared better in the second quarter than in the first, noted Nancy L. Smith, a Ryland vice president. The first quarter had marked the first time in the company's 24-year history that it lost money.

Since then, Ryland's business has been up, according to Ms. Smith, with orders particularly strong in March.

"What we see is a gradual return on the homebuilding side of our business, rather than something more robust," she said. The other major part of Ryland's business is mortgage services.
