VIENNA,VA. — VIENNA, Va. -- Bruce Lehnhard dropped a 4-foot par putt on the third extra hole to defeat Bob Boyd and claim his second Middle Atlantic PGA Head Pro championship in the past three years yesterday at a soggy, but superbly conditioned, Westwood Country Club.

Boyd, from Woodmont CC, posted a 3-under-par 35-3469, then had to wait nearly two hours for Lehnhard, out of Lake of the Woods in Locust Grove, Va., to finish, knowing he had shot a 5-under 31 on the front nine. Two bogeys on the back left Lehnhard at 31-3869.

The two parred the first two playoff holes, and at the 408-yard third, Boyd was in the fairway, Lehnhard in the right rough. The Rockville pro put his approach shot 25 feet below the cup, and his opponent, protecting against a "flyer," came up short of the green from where he pitched to 4 feet above the flagstick.

Boyd knocked his first putt 8 feet past the hole, then watched the second one curl out of the hole.

"Although the pin was back, I knew the green flattened out and was even a little downhill around the cup," said Lehnhard, 48, familiar with the course as a Northern Virginia pro since 1965. "That's what happened to Bob. He was looking uphill, but the ball got over the crest and took off on him."

Both players hit 16 greens, with Boyd, seeing the course for the first time, making four birdies, including one on a putt from 40 feet at No. 5. Lehnhard's five birdie putts came on five of the last six holes.

Where Lehnhard, a playoff winner against Jimmy Hayes two years ago, had the best front nine, the best back nine was rung up by Brian Morrison of Baltimore CC, a 4-under-par 32. He reached eight of the greens in regulation and had four birdies on putts ranging from a foot to 25 feet. The effort enabled him to tie for fifth with 40-3272.
