Stanmeyer runs for roses in record time

Cathy Stanmeyer, 22, of Great Falls, Va., won the Montgomery County Road Runners Club's Run for the Roses 5K Saturday in Kensington in a course-record 17 minutes, 41 seconds.

The run, the fifth in the Road Runners Club of America's Potomac Valley 11-race Women's Distance Festival Grand Prix, was the fourth of the series that Stanmeyer has won. Stanmeyer broke the course record of 17:48 set by Mary Alico in 1984.

Mark Stickley, 29, of Strasburg, Va., and defending champion Tammy Slusser, 26, of Monroeville, Pa., won their divisions of Sunday's Bon-Ton/York Newspaper 5-Miler in York, Pa. The top finishers:

The second annual Twilight River Run 5K, sponsored by the Corporate West Running Club and Patapsco State Park, will be held Friday at Patapsco State Park Avalon Field in Elkridge. Awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers, as well as the top three finishers in eight age groups for the shady out-and-back course along the Patapsco River. NOTES: Maureen Hall and Brad Uhlfelder set Baltimore Road Runners Club records in the club's Track Series No. 4 meet Wednesday night at McDonogh School. Hall improved the 1,320-yard record by 28 seconds, and Uhlfelder broke the 2-mile mark by 11 seconds. The final race in the series will be Aug. 7 at Johns Hopkins. . . . Andy Passmore and Jenny Caple won their divisions of the Westminster Road Runners Club's Sells Mills Eight-Mile Run Thursday at Taneytown. . . . Don Forgione, 40, of Baltimore finished 10th in Sunday's Cambridge Summer Biathlon, a 3-mile run, followed by a 20-mile bike and a 3-mile run. . . . The week's top finishers:
