George L. Diegel Jr.

George L. Diegel Jr., 74, a retired MTA bus driver, died of a heart attack Friday at his home in Parkville.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Leonard J. Ruck funeral establishment, 5305 Harford Road.

Born and reared in Baltimore, Mr. Diegel retired from the Mass Transit Administration in the mid-1970s after 35 years of employment. He had lived for many years in Highlandtown.

In the 1930s and early 1940s, Mr. Diegel pitched baseball in city leagues and played briefly for a minor league team in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. After World War II and through the early 1970s, Mr. Diegel umpired high school, college, American Legion and Navy baseball games.

Mr. Diegel served in the Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, the former Frances Butta; a daughter, Geraldine Bowling of Baltimore; a brother, Albert Diegel of Baltimore; and a grandson.
