Two men shot outside North Ave. nightclub

July 29, 1991

Two men were shot -- one seriously -- while in front of a popular North Avenue nightclub early today.

Police said James Johns, 36, who is believed to be from New York, was shot in the head and thigh while in front of Odells Nightclub, in the first block of E. North Ave., about 3:30 a.m.

He was taken to Union Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.

Police said that Johns was in a parked car in front of Odells when a man armed with an Uzi-type of weapon approached him and demanded jewelry and money.

Witnesses told police that Johns handed over jewelry. However, the gunman then apparently became nervous and fired several bursts from the weapon, hitting Johns and Charles Moore, 42, of the 1600 block of E. Cold Spring Lane, who was standing nearby on the sidewalk.

Moore, who was shot in the foot, was also taken to Union Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

No arrests have been made, and the suspect was identified only as wearing a black jacket.
