Baukhages III B&O vice president

Services for Frederick E. Baukhages III, a retired Baltimore and Ohio railroad vice president, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church in Luray, Va.

Mr. Baukhages died of heart failure Friday at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va. He was 81.

Born in Baltimore, he lived much of his life in Virginia after his family moved there when he was 7. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1930 and the University of Virginia Law School in 1933.

Mr. Baukhages had been a member of the legal staff for the Reconstruction Finance Corporation in Washington in 1935 and later was an assistant to the vice president of operations at Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Neb.

He moved to Baltimore in 1944 to work for B&O, becoming a vice president in 1963. He retired a year later and returned to Mathews County, Va., to practice law privately.

Mr. Baukhages was a member of the Virginia Bar Association for more than 50 years and a member of the University Club in Baltimore.

He is survived by two sons, Frederick E. Baukhages IV of Luray and Frederick W. Baukhages of Baltimore; a daughter, Dorothy E. Harfst of Lynchburg, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Griswold B. Glover of Anniston, Ala.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
