Bass fishing is taking a page from the NFL's playbook for kids and will hold a CastingKids competition early next month that is a takeoff on the punt, pass and kick contests.

The Bassmaster BP CastingKids Exhibition, which is a pilot project for a national competition this fall, is open to youngsters in two age groups, from 7-10 and 11-14. The challenge is to flip, pitch and cast a lure at a 12-inch target at distances of 10, 20 and 30 feet.

Scoring is based on a point system, with the highest points determining the winner.

The Maryland B.A.S.S. Federation will conduct six regional competitions on Aug. 3 and Aug. 10. The winners will advance to the state championship Aug. 21 during BASS Masters Classic week.

The Aug. 3 qualifiers will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Greenbrier State Park near Hagerstown, Gilbert Run Park in Charles County and at Sandy Point State Park near Annapolis.

The Aug. 10 qualifiers will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Centennial Lake in Columbia, Middle Branch Park in Baltimore and Tuckahoe State Park near Denton.

The state championship will be held at Centennial Lake Aug. 21 at 9 a.m.

No entry fee is required. Registration will take place on the morning of the qualifiers at the event sites.
