Summer Senate has hot finish

July 27, 1991|By Marty McGee

LAUREL -- Summer Senate surged past several rivals in the early stretch en route to a half-length victory in the $26,000 feature at Laurel Race Course yesterday.

Summer Senate was the 11-10 favorite in a field of seven older turf runners. Marco Castaneda rode the 5-year-old son of Topsider for trainer Barclay Tagg.

Castaneto took a slight lead from Eternal Orage turning for home in the 1 1/16-mile race, but then Summer Senate surged past them with an outside rush. At about the same time, Muddy Rudder got through an opening along the rail, but he couldn't match strides with Summer Senate in the final sixteenth-mile.

Of yesterday's nine live Laurel races, Summer Senate was the only winning favorite.
