Continental Realty is proposing to expand Reisterstown Road Plaza by building 125,000 square feet of retail and flexible work space on an underutilized parking lot west of the main shopping center at Reisterstown Road and Patterson Avenue.

Architects with the Columbia Design Collective last week showed Baltimore's Design Advisory Panel preliminary plans that call for the construction of three low-rise buildings ranging from 36,000 to 45,000 square feet.

The buildings would be separated from the shopping center by a tree-lined boulevard and leased to a businesses that need flexible work space or research and development space, according to Vice President Mark Levy.

He said Continental is aiming to obtain all the required building permits in time to begin construction of the $8 million project next year. He said the actual pace of construction will depend on the pace of leasing.

Continental also owns the shopping center, which was built in 1960.
