Wallace wins rain-shortened Miller 500 Wreck-marred race ends after 179 laps LONG POND, Pa.

July 22, 1991

TORONTO — LONG POND, Pa. -- Rusty Wallace won the rain-shortened NASCAR Miller Genuine Draft 500 yesterday for his second victory of the year and his first in three months.

Wallace, who earned $34,100, had the lead after 176 of 200 laps when the race, which had been filled with wrecks, was stopped. Two hours later, the race resumed under caution for three laps before rain came again, ending the race.

"We're back. We're looking good," Wallace said.

Wallace's Pontiac, which would have needed a pit stop for fuel, got a push during the final caution laps from Dale Earnhardt's Chevrolet, which was out of contention.

Mark Martin finished second and Geoff Bodine third, both in Fords.

Caution flags dominated the first half of the race at Pocono International Raceway, and Ernie Irvan, Martin and Wallace dominated the last half.

Irvan led 25 laps up to lap 169, when with rain threatening he made a scheduled pit stop, giving Wallace the lead. Wallace held it until the caution flag for rain on lap 174 and the red flag after 176.

Forty-two of the first 107 laps were run under 10 caution flags. The worst wreck came on lap 72, when Stricklin, battling Irvan for the lead, spun coming out of turn 3.

"I don't think he meant to hit me, but he did," Stricklin said.

Irvan had come up on Stricklin from the inside but denied making contact.

"I think it got him loose when I run up on him so fast," Irvan said.

Several cars bunched near them started colliding. Richard Petty's Pontiac went over the hood of Ricky Rudd's Chevrolet, and Bobby Hillin's spinning Pontiac sent Darrell Waltrip's Chevrolet head-on into the infield wall along the front straightaway.

At least 10 drivers were involved, but Wallace emerged unscathed.
