Bias Panel Needs Members

July 21, 1991

Despite the resignation of two members and the recent death of another, the remaining members of the Carroll County Community Relations Commission have vowed to keep fighting for the panel's existence, saidVice Chairwoman Virginia Harrison of Sykesville.

The panel formedin late 1989 and began mediating local complaints of discrimination, particularly around race and access to the handicapped.

But since January, the panel has had to struggle with a withdrawal of support from the Carroll Commisioners.

The previous Board of Commissioners had provided some clerical help and philosophical support throught a resolution. The current board, however, claims it hasn't the authority to be affiliated with the Community Relations Commission, which was formed by an independent group of social service professionals.

"We took a vote of confidence," Harrison said of the commission's July meeting. Remaining members are Chairwoman Shelly Sarsfield, the Rev. Bernie Zerkel and Andrea Mack, all of Westminster, andRichard D. Bucher of Mount Airy.

But members Carlos L. Concha of Sykesville and Dale Sears of Hampsted have resigned.
