Houston Astros -- Place P Mark Portugal (strained groin muscle) on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Thursday.

Montreal Expos -- Purchased contract of former Baltimore Orioles P Dave Schmidt from Class AAA Indianapolis. Optioned P Steve Frey (0-1, 4.55 ERA) to Indianapolis.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Signed IF Dmitri Young, first-round pick in the June amateur draft. He will report to the rookie league team in Johnson City, Tenn.


4 Minnesota Timberwolves -- Signed F Dan Godfread.

Philadelphia 76ers -- Signed G Mitchell Wiggins to a 1-year contract.

Il Messaggero (Italian League) -- Signed F Rick Mahorn to a 2-year, $3.6 million contract.

Pesaro Scavolini (Italian league) -- Signed Washington Bullets G Haywoode Workman (8.0 ppg, 5.0 apg) to a 2-year contract.


Texas A&M -- Announced that LB Anthony Williams has been ruled academically ineligible for the fall.
