Hickman rally upsets medalist in state amateur

July 18, 1991|By John W. Stewart

Linda Hickman, a 10-handicap golfer from Chartwell Country Club, did a better job than her opponent of getting an erratic game under control on the back nine, and upset medalist Carol Davies of Argyle CC, 3 and 1, in the first round of the 71st Maryland State Women's Amateur championship at Rolling Road Golf Club yesterday.

Davies, who carries a 4 handicap, erased a 2-hole deficit early on the back nine, but Hickman rallied to win three holes and halve another in building her winning margin.

"At least I parred the last three holes," she said, choosing not to reflect on earlier problems. As for Davies, she said, "I played awful."

Hickman had gained the championship in a playoff Tuesday, surviving when when she hit a choked-down 5-wood shot from the ninth fairway to the first green and made a birdie putt.

Two matches ended in 1-up decisions. Joan Lins of Turf Valley outlasted Sheila Dagucon of Montgomery CC on the 19th hole, and Cheri Cooper of Hobbit's Glen won with an 8-foot par putt at the 18th green, after Leigh Farrell of the CC of Maryland had missed her par bid from 9 feet.

Lins won her match with a bogey-5 at the first extra hole. She had squared the match at the 15th, and halved the next three to force the overtime. Lins reached the first green in two, then three-putted from five feet for the win when Dagucon, one-time Women's District Amateur champion, needed three to get to the green, then three-putted from four feet.

Three-time champion Joan Winchester made a hole-in-one at the 136-yard 15th, hitting a 6-iron shot that bounced once and rolled into the cup. It was the third competitive ace for the Rolling Road member, the second at that hole.

NOTES: Shannon Hanley, a losing finalist last year, lost only 1 hole while playing even par for 12 holes in beating Carole Ratcliffe. . . . Metropolitan champion Andrea Kraus turned 2 up on 2-time titlist Jane Mason, then was even par in winning 3 of the first 4 holes on the back. . . . Bonnie Fry had 8 pars and a birdie and was 5 up on Cami Berher at the turn.
