July 18, 1991

Two 14-year-old boys died in unrelated accidents yesterday while playing with guns, Prince George's County police said.

Police said Tyrone Dowtin was shot while he and several friends were at an apartment in Landover. While the youths were handling a gun around 1 a.m., it went off and struck Tyrone once in the chest.

He died at Prince George's County Hospital about 3:40 a.m.

Joseph Antonio Bell, 20, of Washington, D.C., turned himself in to Prince George's County sheriff's deputies yesterday afternoon in connection with the shooting, the sheriff's office reported.

Mr. Bell was wanted on previous charges that included attempted theft, malicious destruction of property and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

In the other accident, Keith Dwight Carter of Oxon Hill was shot in the head about 6:45 a.m. He and several friends were apparently playing Russian roulette in an apartment in the 800 block of Marcy Avenue, investigators said.
