ROCKVILLE -- Mike McGinnis, whose working weekend at Holly Hills Country Club was marked by a round of golf in a foursome with President Bush, continued his high yesterday with 36-3470 at Manor CC to lead sectional qualifying for the United States Senior Championship.

There were 89 starters for the four available places, and McGinnis was followed by Chuck Ebner, CC of Maryland, 34-3771, and amateurs Dave King of Bethesda CC, 36-3571 and Ralph Bogart of the Chevy Chase Club, 36-3672.

McGinnis, 52, advancing for the first time in three tries, included three back-nine birdies in his tour of the 6,382-yard, par-35-3570 course.

"Will you call my playing partner and tell him I qualified," McGinnis said, referring to his Saturday game.

Ebner, qualifying for the second time in three attempts, had an eagle (chipped in from 10 yards off the green at the 465-yard ninth), a birdie and four bogeys -- two off bad tee shots and two off missed greens -- and closed with seven straight pars.

King, who turned 50 on Sunday, celebrated by making an eagle -- two on his first hole as a Senior, sinking a 125-yard, 9-iron shot from the fairway. After going 1-over on the front, he marked nine pars on the back.

Bogart, 71, a seven-time qualifier, parred the second extra hole from a bunker to get past Bob Oakes of Fort Meade (72) in a playoff for the final spot.

The championship will be held July 25-28 at Oakland Hills CC in Birmingham, Mich.
