Waugh Chapel Divers

July 16, 1991

The Waugh Chapel diving team earned 11 medals -- including seven golds -- at the Padonia Invitational last week at the Cockeysville pool.

Record performances included first-place finishes in every boys event on the schedule and a 1-2-3 sweep of the 13-14 boys events.

Waugh Chapel coach Brian Payne combined with alumni diver Chris Streight (1989) for a gold medal in the Open Synchronized event in which two divers simultaneously execute dives off separate boards.

Darren Taylor, the defending 1990 Central Maryland Diving League champion, led the sweep in the 13-14 boys events with a total of 137.15 points. He was followed by teammate Mike Virtue, who earned the silver medal in that event, narrowly outdistancing Jeremy Haskin, who claimedthe bronze medal for the Waugh Chapel divers.

Michael Ball took first in the 8-and-under boys division, while fellow Waugh Chapel diver Sean Ball took third.

In the 9-10 division, Jonathan Gardner captured first among the boys, while Rebecca Langendorf took sixth for the girls.

Jennifer Jett and Tom Hamblin both captured first-place medals in the 15-18 age group. Joe Virtue took first in the 11-12 boys, and teammate Amy Langendorf took third in the 11-12 girls.
