Q: I'd like to start collecting Torquay pottery. I'm especially interested in countryside cottage-decorated dishes with mottoes around the rim. Can you put me in touch with some sources?
A: You can join the Torquay Pottery Collectors Society by writing to its U.S.-Canada coordinator, Beth Pulsipher, Box 373, Schoolcraft, Mich. 49087-0373, or phoning her at (616) 679-4195. The $22.50 annual membership includes an informative quarterly publication. The society's fourth annual convention took place this year July 5-7 in St. Charles, Ill., and featured a large assortment of Torquay pottery and related publications, references and products.
Around the turn of the century, a lot of Torquay pottery was imported from England to Canada and the United States and was sold as souvenirs. Many collectors favor Torquay mottoware, and information can be found in the "Torquay Motto Ware" book, available for $12.50 postpaid from the society.
