NL -- Suspended Atlanta Braves OF Ron Gant for 1 game and fined him for bumping an umpire in a game July 4.

Chicago White Sox -- Claimed OF Mike Huff (.240, 2 HRs, 10 RBI) on waivers from the Cleveland Indians.

Cleveland Indians -- Recalled IF/OF Carlos Martinez from Class AA Canton-Akron of the Eastern League.

Kansas City Royals -- Re-activated P Bret Saberhagen (shoulder tendinitis) from 15-day DL. Designated P Andy McGaffigan (0-0, 4.50) for assignment.

New York Yankees -- Optioned P Dave Eiland (1-3, 4.75) to Columbus.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Signed manager Jim Fregosi to a 1-year contract extension through 1992.

San Diego Padres -- Placed P Ed Whitson (bone spurs in right elbow) on the 15-day DL retroactive to July 6. Recalled P John Costello from Class AAA Las Vegas.
