This is a beef and barbecue place that really piles it on. The barbecue is a particular treat: dark, chewy and smoky.
The Canopy's large pit beef sandwich ($4.50) is one of those monsters that requires some maneuvering for the first few bites. The slightly more manageable medium is $3.75.
Pit-cooked ham or turkey go for the same price, and sliced roast pork, barbecued beef, pork, chicken or grilled chicken breast are just pennies more.
You can have them with barbecue sauce, horseradish, Tiger Sauce or the usual condiments.
A half-slab of spareribs, 3 1/2 pounds, goes for $15.50, and a two-pound slab is $8.50. Baby ribs are $8.95.
Side orders at the Canopy are just what you'd expect at a barbecue house: Ocean fries ($1.35 to $3.50), baked beans ($1.25), corn on the cob ($1.25) and coleslaw or potato salad (95 cents or $2.95 for a quart).
There's also homemade beef jerky for $1. Soups include crab ($2.35), hot chili ($1.95) and chicken noodle ($1.65).
You can take out orders by the pound or the half-pound, with sliced pit beef or roast pork for $5.50 a half-pound, beef or pork barbecue for $4.95 a half pound and beef jerky for $10.50 a half-pound.
