The Maryland Bays have figured out how to put Sunday's open date to good use.
The Bays had been scheduled to play the Salt Lake Sting, but that American Professional Soccer League franchise folded last week. Instead, the Bays are inviting season ticket-holders to come and meet the players at Cedar Lane Park from 5 to 8 p.m.
The Bays also announced a multi-option plan for fans who purchased tickets for Sunday's canceled game: tickets can be used for any future Bays game at Cedar Lane Park; tickets can be used for the Aug. 10 game at RFK Stadium in Washing
ton against the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks; or ticket money will be refunded by calling the Bays' office (880-0047) before July 26.
* Goalkeeper Steve Powers, who saw his 18-game winning streak come to an end last weekend against San Francisco, has been named the Bays' Player of the Month for June. Powers faced 51 shots, made 19 saves and had a 5-0 record for the month. His June goals-against average was 0.60, as he allowed just three goals.
* Later this week, the Bays hope to make an announcement concerning a possible game with Sheffield Wednesday, the winner of the British championship, whose star is American John ZTC Harkes. Bays officials have reserved Cedar Run Park for July 30 in hopes of playing the game then.
Sheffield Wednesday will play the U.S. National Team in Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia on Aug. 2.
* The second annual World Cup Soccer Tournament for the top amateur unlimited soccer teams in the tri-state area will be held Saturday at the Maryland Sports Arena in Edgewood.
Last year's cup was won by the Harford County All-Stars.
