Seattle Mariners -- Signed their No. 1 draft pick, and 11th player overall, P Shawn Estes, and assigned him to rookie league Bellingham.


James Madison -- Named former Maryland coach Christy Morgan field hockey coach.

Western Maryland -- Announced that the following 9 freshmen and 1 transfer will play basketball for the school next season: F Andrew Dziengeleski; G Michael Eves (Bel Air); F Lance Farley (transfer); C Neil Haley; F Tony Jenkins, (Poly); G Jeff Masterson; F Brian McCabe; F Mark Steele; G Johnny Williams (Broadneck); G Pat Young (Mount St. Joseph).

Oregon State -- Suspended HB Dwayne Owens, who set 3 NCAA kick-return records last season, for the entire season because of violation of team rules.


Cincinnati Bengals -- Agreed to terms with CB Antoine Bennett.

Denver Broncos -- Signed CB Tyrone Braxton to a series of 1-year contracts.

Los Angeles Rams -- Signed DT Robert Young.

Minnesota Vikings -- Signed S Ken Stills, LB Jimmy Williams and WR Cris Carter.

New England Patriots -- Released TE Zeke Mowatt. Signed DE Marion Hobby and WR Gene Taylor.

New Orleans Saints -- Signed FB Buford Jordan and FB Bobby Morse to a 1-year contracts; G Hayward Haynes to a 2-year contract; and P Kirk Maggio to a 1-year contract.

Phoenix Cardinals -- Signed CB Anthony Parker. Agreed to terms with CB Steve Lofton and RB Greg Amsler.

Washington Redskins -- Signed LB Eric Naposki.


Los Angeles Kings -- Announced they had sold their AHL franchise in New Haven, Conn., in favor of retaining IHL Phoenix as their only minor-league hockey affiliate; Renewed the contract of Ralph Backstrom to coach Phoenix, hired Rick Kozuback to replace assistant coach Garry Unger and scheduled an NHL exhibition game in Phoenix on Sept. 26 between the Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins.

New Jersey Devils -- Named Robbie Ftorek assistant coach.
