CANDID CLOSET

July 10, 1991

Monica Shenean Brown will be a senior at Roland Park Country School this fall. She wants a career in writing but now likes to read, practice the piano and play basketball. (Intramural only, she's too chicken to try out for the school team.) At school Monica wears a uniform of blue skirt, white shirt and sensible brown shoes. Summer break gives her a chance to be more creative with clothes and more time for shopping with the extra money she earns at her two part-time jobs.

How would you describe your taste in clothing?

usually stick to basic things like jeans, denim separates, plain tops and straight skirts that never go out of style. Then if something cute and trendy catches my eye, I'll buy it knowing I have basics to depend on.

What's the newest thing in your closet?

recently bought a little color-blocked trapeze dress. In summer I'll buy more of my own clothes. I love being out of uniform. We had quite a few "no-uniform" days at the end of the school year because it was so hot. Everybody was thrilled.

What's the oldest thing in your closet?

had a turquoise sundress ever since 6th grade. I'm 5-feet-8 1/2 and I still wear it as it gets shorter and shorter along with the styles.

Do you have a true standby that you wear to feel good?

really like anything purple and feel that I look a lot better when I wear it.

What have you held on to for sentimental reasons?

kept the black and white formal dress I wore in the 7th grade for the winter program and piano recital.

What is your wardrobe weakness?

Earrings! I love every kind, from small dainty ones to long shoulder-dusters. I must be the only girl in the world who doesn't have pierced ears so I look for clip-ons or something I can convert. My mom wouldn't let me pierce when everybody else was doing it. Now she says it's OK, but I just haven't got around to it.

What is the most expensive item in your closet?

white tea-length lace Gunne Sax dress. We have to wear white at all school graduation ceremonies. For my own graduation, I'll have to find a long white formal.

What is the least expensive item in your closet?

paid 50 cents for rhinestone dangle earrings at a yard sale. My mom's really into yard sales and I often go along to look for earrings, accessories and books.

What is the wildest outfit that you ever bought?

once wore a very, very short miniskirt with tall black boots and an oversize sweater to a mall. I got a lot unwanted attention and will never do that again.

Do you have any shopping tips to share?

get the best deals I shop at the end of the season. I like department stores, but also look in little shops and boutiques. I don't drive yet, so I depend on friends and my mom for a rides to the mall and make a day of it.
