Ryan loses no-hit bid in 8th, as Rangers defeat Angels, 7-0

July 08, 1991

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Nolan Ryan took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning and wound up allowing two hits in 8 1/3 innings last night, as the Texas Rangers beat the California Angels, 7-0.

Dave Winfield, who had been 1-for-22 lifetime against Ryan with 13 strikeouts, broke up Ryan's try for a major-league record eighth no-hitter with a clean single to center leading off the eighth inning on an 0-2 pitch.

"I was trying to keep it off the plate, hoping that maybe he'd chase it," Ryan said. "But it came in, and I was out there a long time, and I think he was looking for something out over the plate."

Gary Gaetti led off the ninth with a double to left-center field. Ryan was removed after Donnie Hill, the next batter, lined out to first.

Ryan, 44, who went to a hospital emergency room Wednesday when he thought pain from a pulled chest muscle might be a heart attack, was bidding for a perfect game until he walked Luis Polonia leading off the seventh. Polonia was erased when Wally Joyner hit into a double play.

Ryan (5-4) struck out 14 and walked one, the 211th double-digit strikeout game of his career and his fourth this season. At one point, he struck out seven consecutive batters, a Texas club record. Ryan, the majors' all-time strikeout leader, increased his total to 5,424.

He no-hit the Toronto Blue Jays on May 1 and was attempting to become only the fifth pitcher in major-league history to accomplish the feat twice in one season. The most recent one to do it was Ryan in 1973.

Ryan was dominating on a windy and humid 89-degree night in Texas. When he finally gave up a hit, he got a two-minute ovation from the crowd of 37,307 and tipped his cap.

Winfield had struck out swinging twice in his first two at-bats against Ryan. Before Winfield's hit, nobody had come close, although Gaetti hit two pop-ups to short left field that the wind blew around.
