REVIEWS

Here are summaries of some recent computing product reviews. Each product is rated on a scale of one to four, with one computer indicating poor and four indicating excellent:

SuperStor, for IBM PC or compatible with at least 640 kilobytes of random-access memory and DOS 3.2 or later. $129. From AddStor Inc., 3905 Bohannon Drive, Menlo Park, Calif. 94025. (415) 688-0465.

"On-the-fly" compression programs can automatically squeeze program and data files smaller so they'll occupy less disk space and can be more quickly stored and retrieved. SuperStor is a good example for PCs and can easily double your PC disk capacity.

SuperDisk!, for Apple Macintosh Plus or later with System 6.0 or System 7.0. $89. From Alysis Software Corp., 1231 31st Ave., San Francisco, Calif. 94122. (415) 566-2263.

SuperDisk! does the same for Macs as SuperStor does for IBMs, though it requires you to explicitly name the files or folders you want to compress. But SuperDisk! makes up for that flaw with another fine feature -- it can create "auto-expanding" compressed files that any Macintosh can receive and unsqueeze even without its own copy of SuperDisk!.

(These are reviews of shareware programs for IBM and compatible computers.)

Checks Plus. This is no ordinary money management program. With Checks Plus you can keep track of your many accounts, write and print checks, track your budget -- all within a fast and slick, user-friendly menu system. In fact, you can spend hours doing what most sane people can do in minutes with a pencil, a 29-cent notebook and a couple of shoe boxes. Unlike shoe boxes, however, this shareware program for IBMs and compatibles is password-protected. Look for version 5.01 on bulletin boards. Registration costs $21.95 from Wesco Development Corp. 12158 Penderview Terrace, Suite 1136, Fairfax, Va. 22033.

Message screen. Here's a computer version of yellow stick-on notes. You load Message Screen, tell your co-workers where you can be reached and when you'll be back and they, in turn, can leave witty little messages to be acted upon when you return. Look for version 2.0 on bulletin boards. Then, if you can't live without Message Screen, register it for $10 from T. Tyler, Box 2700 SW Division, Huntington Beach, Calif. 92647. Tyler has a dozen other handy little utilities, including:

Important Daily Events. If your life is bogged down in endless details and a simple message screen isn't enough to take care of it all, here's a surprisingly powerful reminder program that also can be used as a diary. Important Daily Events will also track your car's maintenance. Look for version 2.0 on bulletin boards. Registration costs $10 from Mr. Tyler.

(Want to try these shareware programs before you buy them? We'll send you copies for $4 each, plus tax for Californians. Our $1 catalog lists hundreds of shareware programs. Write to Shareware, P.O. Box 7037, Long Beach, Calif. 90807. Or call (213) 595-6870. Let us know whether you need 5 1/4 -or 3 1/2 -inch disks.)
