Thanos trial set to start tomorrow
The trial of John Frederick Thanos, who is accused of killing three people, is tentatively scheduled to begin in Snow Hill tomorrow. However, the trial could be moved to another county in Maryland to assure a fair trial, according to Ray Coates Jr., assistant state's attorney. Mr. Coates said the trial will not be moved out of the state.
Mr. Thanos is accused of killing a man in Berlin last fall and of other crimes, including killing two teen-agers in Essex, shooting and wounding a store clerk in Salisbury and shooting at police in Delaware.
Charges pending against mayor
The state prosecutor's office should decide in about two weeks whether or not to charge Berlin Mayor Ron Bireley for using town funds to make improvements to town hall without the town council's permission. Under town charter, no expenditure over $1,000 may be made without the council's approval.
The mayor is also being investigated for awarding a bid for work at the town's electric plant without the council's approval.
