In Excess breaks Belmont record

In Excess won the $500,000 Suburban Handicap in track record time yesterday at Belmont Park in New York.

The 4-year-old colt won for first time in three tries at 1 1/4 miles in 1 minute, 58 1/5 seconds, smashing the Belmont record of 1:59 2/5 set by Alysheba on Sept. 17, 1988.

In Excess came within two-fifths of second of equaling the world record set by Spectacular Bid on Feb. 3, 1980.

* Tight Spot retained his perfect record on grass, leading wire to wire to capture the $219,400 American Handicap at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif.

* Blair's Cove won the $100,000 Grade III Stars and Stripes Handicap by two lengths over Opening Verse at Arlington International Racecourse in Chicago.
