Church parish house to be converted into catering facility

The former Parish House of Christ Church soon will be reborn as a Baltimore's newest banquet hall and catering facility.

Architect Stephen Glassman, who acquired the Victorian Gothic landmark at 1112 St. Paul St. two years ago and renovated it to house the firm he heads, Art and Architectural Design, said he plans to move the design office to the building's second level and use the first floor to accommodate catered events.

Called The Studio at Art and Architectural Design, the 8,000- square-foot facility will provide space for parties, conferences, receptions and other meetings of up to 350 people. Groups that book it will be allowed to chose caterers for each event from a pre-approved list.

Mr. Glassman said he decided to convert the 1870 building to a catering hall and meeting facility because he wanted to generate more revenue from it and believes there are not enough catering facilities downtown, outside of hotels.

Mr. Glassman said he already has several bookings starting later this month and is optimistic about The Studio's chances for success. Because of its intriguing architecture, churchlike acoustics, midtown location and access to a private garden, "this is a building that lends itself to parties and events and conferences," he said. "This seems to be the best use for it."

Located at the northwest corner of St. Paul and Chase streets, Christ Church closed in the mid-1980s and was acquired by George P. Mahoney, a contractor and quixotic Maryland political figure who lived in the Belvedere Hotel and liked the sound of the church's bells.

Mr. Glassman bought the Parish House from Mr. Mahoney one week before he died in 1989. The church remains closed and in the control of Mr. Mahoney's estate.

* A development group headed by James "Mickey" Abrams, Michael Glick and Robert A. Kinsley broke ground recently for the Signature Building, a three-story, 36,000-square-foot office building at 150 Main St. in Reisterstown. Slated for completion in early 1992, the $3 million building is already 50 percent leased. Tenants include Clinical Associates, a multispecialty medical group; and Ed Kelley, a certified public accountant. D. R. Brasher is the architect. Robert A. Kinsley Inc. is the contractor. Corridor Brokerage Services is handling leasing.

* An Eastern Shore company headed by Thomas J. Hutchinson, former head of the Baltimore office of the Murdock Development Co., has filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Kensington Development Limited Partnership of Easton was the company that sought protection June 25. Assets and liabilities were not listed.

* The David-Edward Co. Ltd., a furniture manufacturer, has purchased the former Misty Harbor Inc. raincoat distribution center at 1407 Parker Road in Baltimore County for $2.1 million and is renovating it for use as the headquarters for its Baltimore nTC operation starting this fall. Paul Danko of CB Commercial Real Estate Group Inc. represented the seller, and Mike Koch of Hoffberger & Associates Inc. represented the buyer. Misty Harbor was acquired recently by a Chicago firm and moved its Baltimore operations there, Mr. Danko said. David-Edward also has a plant in Red Lion, Pa., and will continue to operate it after the move, he said.

* Kayne Levin Neilson Bavar Realtors has named four new principals: Walter Patton, Richard C. Tucker, Adam Miller and Andrew Feldman. The new principals will have an ownership interest in the firm and will participate in its management.

* A subsidiary of Maryland National Bank last month acquired a Trammell Crow Co. project, the Annapolis Fashion Festival on Jennifer Road in Annapolis, by bidding $7 million for it at a public auction by Atlantic Auctions. The auction was a foreclosure sale on behalf of the bank, which began foreclosure proceedings against the developer earlier this year.

* The Arundel Corp. and FRP Development have moved their corporate headquarters to a new $3 million, 30,000-square-foot office building at the Loveton business community north of Hunt Valley. Arundel Corp. occupies 20,000 square feet and FRP occupies 2,000 square feet in the building, which was designed by Lapicki-Smith Associates.

* Church Hospital is building a $3.6 million, 507-space parking garage next to the hospital on the property bounded by Fairmount Avenue and Bond, Bethel and Baltimore streets. BWJ Inc./Architects was the designer, and Whiting Turner Contracting Co. is the general contractor. The three-level building will be complete by May 1992.
