Two County Inmates Indicted After Assault, Escape Attempt

Two inmates at the county Detention Center have been indicted by thegrand jury for assaulting the jail's librarian and attempting to escape on May 17.

Melvin W. Ward Jr., 19, of Havre de Grace, and Jason S. Leamer, 30, of Hollidaysburg, Pa., were indicted June 11 on charges of escape, conspiracy to escape, assault, assault and battery andfalse imprisonment.

According to a police report filed in Harford Circuit Court, Wardwent into the Detention Center's library, where Leamer was waiting for him.

Leamer then closed the library's door, approached the librarian from behind and put his hand over the woman's mouth while Ward tried in vain to kick out a window, the report says.

They were apprehended shortly afterward.

Ward is awaiting trial on two counts of attempted murder, assault with intent to murder, assault, maliciousdestruction and one count of reckless endangerment and use of a handgun in a Feb. 25 shooting.

He also is awaiting trial for possession of drugs in a separate case, the records say. In addition, he is serving a 6-month sentence for theft and battery. That sentence was issued on May 23.

Leamer is awaiting trial for robbery of two Bel Airbanks. He is charged with two counts each of theft, robbery with a deadly weapon and use of a handgun.
