The only thing necessary to enjoy...

PICK OF THE WEEK: The only thing necessary to enjoy Opposite Directions is an appreciation of music. "If you like music, then you'll like us," said Darin Engh of the duo. "We have really good vocal harmony. A lot of people who come to see us seem to appreciate that."

The duo chose its name because Mr. Engh of Ocean City is left handed, and his partner Bob Wilkinson of Ocean Pines is right handed. Mr. Engh plays guitar and Mr. Wilkinson plays guitar, bass and harmonica. Both of them sing.

"The best way to describe us is to say we play acoustic rock. We play a lot of James Taylor; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Jim Croce; Jimmy Buffet; America; and Grateful Dead. A lot of our songs are from the '70s," Mr. Engh said.

The songs chosen on a particular night depend on the mood of the crowd. "We try to read the crowd. If it looks like they are ready to have a good time, we get into it and play a lot of fun stuff. We cater to the audience as much as possible," Mr. Engh said. Audiences are usually 20 to 40 years old, he said.

Mr. Engh, 25, and Mr. Wilkinson, 30, are brothers-in-law and family men. Both have children. "We have a good time on stage, then we go home," Mr. Engh said.

During the summer, Opposite Directions stays in Ocean City, then in the winter performs in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware and Florida.
