AL -- All-Star Game manager Tony La Russa named Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston and Twins manager Tom Kelly as coaches and announced he will use A's coaches Rene Lachemann, Dave Duncan and Tommie Reynolds for batting practice and other pre-game duties. The Blue Jays' Tommy Craig and White Sox's Herm Schneider will be the trainers.

NL -- All-Star Game manager Lou Piniella named Pirates manager Jim Leyland and Astros manager Art Howe as coaches and announced he will use Reds coaches Jackie Moore, Sam Perlozzo and Stan Williams for batting practice and other pre-game duties. The Braves' Dave Pursley and Phillies' Jeff Cooper will be the trainers. League fined P Roger McDowell $1,000 for hitting Otis Nixon with a pitch and Braves P Tom Glavine $200 for brushing back Dale Murphy, both in a game June 19.

Atlanta Braves -- Announced that 1B Sid Bream (strained back) underwent arthroscopic surgery and will be out 4-6 weeks.

Chicago Cubs -- Fired pitching coach Dick Pole. Named Billy Connors pitching coach. Class AAA Iowa Cubs signed P Dave LaPoint to a minor-league contract.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Recalled P Dennis Cook from Class AAA Albuquerque. Optioned OF Butch Davis (.000 in 1 AB) to Albuquerque.

Montreal Expos -- Placed 1B-OF Larry Walker (strained right hamstring) on the 15-day DL. Activated OF Kenny Williams from the 15-day DL.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Recalled OF Rob Ducey and OF Derek Bell from Class AAA Syracuse. Optioned former Orioles P Mickey Weston (0 runs in 2 IP) to Syracuse.


San Antonio Spurs -- Waived G David Wingate (Dunbar).


Davidson -- Named John Filar women's basketball coach.

North Florida -- Named Mary Ortelee women's basketball coach, effective Sept. 1.


Indianapolis Colts -- Signed DB Michael Ball and DB Keith Taylor.


Hampton Roads Admirals (ECHL) -- Announced they have signed a 1-year working agreement with the Washington Capitals.
