Maryland takes mike away from Matte

June 28, 1991|By John Steadman

Football analyst Tom Matte has been informed he will not return to the radio announcing booth for University of Maryland football games this season. Matte, a former Ohio State halfback who went on to star for 12 years with the Baltimore Colts, said he was disappointed to hear the news from Maryland athletic director Andy Geiger.

"I kept being told what a great job I had done for the last two years," he said, "and then I get this kind of a phone call. I had developed an excellent relationship with the coaches and players and had watched the program grow under coach Joe Krivak. I kept hearing from the Jefferson Pilot Network I was the top choice."

Matte said he understood from Geiger that a one-time Maryland football player would be hired in his place to provide game analysis and color.
