Major League Baseball -- Announced that the AL's Joe Brinkma will be the plate umpire at the All-Star Game on July 9 in Toronto. Also in the crew will be the AL's Ken Kaiser and Larry Young and NL's John McSherry, Jim Quick and Greg Bonin.

Atlanta Braves -- Placed OF David Justice (strained back) and 1B Sid Bream (strained back) on the 15-day DL. Recalled OF Deion Sanders and IF Mike Bell from Class AAA Richmond.

Baltimore Orioles -- Signed OF Jim Wawruck, No. 5 draft choice out of the University of Vermont.

Boston Red Sox -- Called up 1B Mo Vaughn (.278, 14 HRs, 50 RBI at Class AAA Pawtucket). Sent OF Phil Plantier (.235 in 17 AB) to Pawtucket.

Chicago White Sox -- Traded P Grady Hall to the Cleveland

Indians for P Robert Person. Assigned Person to Class A South Bend.

Cincinnati Reds -- Activated OF Eric Davis from the 15-day DL. Optioned P Tim Layana (18.00 ERA in 3 IP) to Class AAA Nashville.

Cleveland Indians -- Traded P Tom Candiotti (7-6, 2.24 ERA) and minor-league OF Turner Ward to the Toronto Blue Jays for P Denis Boucher (0-3, 4.56 before being sent to Class AAA), OF Glenallen Hill (.233, 3 HRs, 11 RBI), OF Mark Whiten (.228, 2, 19) and a player to be named. Sent IF Luis Lopez (.233, 0, 1) and OF Beau Allred (.232, 3, 12) to Class AAA Colorado Springs.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Placed Jay Howell (sore right elbow) on the 15-day DL. Recalled P Carlos Hernandez from Class AAA Albuquerque.

New York Mets -- Announced that their Class AA affiliate will move from Williamsport, Pa., to Binghamton, N.Y., effective 1992.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Placed P Pat Combs (inflamed left shoulder) on the 15-day DL. Activated P Wally Ritchie from the 15-day DL. Ritchie served his 1-game suspension for fighting June 4 after being activated.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Assigned OF Turner Ward to Class AAA Syracuse.


Golden State Warriors -- Traded the rights to G Lamont Strothers to the Portland Trail Blazers for second-round draft picks in 1995 and 1999.

Houston Rockets -- Traded the rights to F Keith Hughes to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a 1996 second-round draft pick and other considerations.

Miami Tropics (USBL) -- Named Kevin Mackey coach.


Drexel -- Named Keith Cammidge men's soccer coach.

Jacksonville -- Announced that Danny Tirado, basketball guard, withdrew from college to attend American University.

Yale -- Announced the resignation of Joe Benanto, baseball coach.


Dallas Cowboys -- Traded TE Rich Gicewicz to the New England Patriots for an undisclosed 1992 draft pick.

Detroit Lions -- Signed TE Mel Farr Jr. (son of former Lions RB Mel Farr and brother of current Lions WR Mike Farr) to a contract. Farr Jr. played most recently for the WLAF's Sacramento Surge.

New York Jets -- Agreed to a contract with QB Browning Nagle, the team's top draft choice. A source close to the negotiations said Nagle signed a 2-year deal worth about $1 million.

Philadelphia Eagles -- Signed free-agent running back Paul Palmer (Churchill High in Montgomery County) to a 1-year

contract without an option. Signed 10th-round draft pick Eric Harmon to 2 1-year contracts.

Pittsburgh Steelers -- Signed LB Andre Jones.


Buffalo Sabres -- Named Edmonton Oilers coach John Muckler director of operations.

Edmonton Oilers -- Named Ted Green coach.

New York Islanders -- Renewed their affiliation with Richmond (ECHL) for the 1991-92 season.


1994 World Cup Organizing Committee -- Announced that the qualifying draw will be held Dec. 8 in New York. Qualification will reduce the field from 120 teams to 22 plus the host United States and defending champion Germany.
