Gerry Clapper celebrates 30th by winning 4-miler

Two-time winner Gerry Clapper beat defending champion Dave Berardi by one second in an exciting finish to the Towson Sports Medicine Crustacean Crawl 4-Miler Friday night at Goucher College.

Clapper, who was celebrating his 30th birthday, finished in 19 minutes, 38 seconds to lead the better-than-average field, which included Bel Air Town Run second-place finisher Doug Mock (third), Governor's Bay Bridge 10K winner Patrick O'Malley (fourth) and GBMC Father's Day 5K winner Stavros Rologas (fifth). Clapper and Berardi were among a pack of six for the race's first two miles before they pulled away.

GBMC Father's Day 5K winner Stacey Nicholson made it two in a row with her 23:14 finish among the women.

The race benefits the East Coast Invitational track meet, which ,, will be held at Frostburg State the weekend of July 19.

The Baltimore Road Runners Club and the Westminster Road Runners Club continue their summer series tomorrow and Thursday nights.

The BRRC's Track Series No. 2 will include 400-, 2,000- and 5,000-meter runs, as well as a 1,000-yard run, and if Track Series No. 1 was any indication, club records should fall. Two weeks ago, Anthony Shaw's 10.6-second 100 meters broke the club's 4-year-old record by eight-tenths of a second, and Clinton Fields' 22.1-second 200 meters broke the club's mark, also 4 years old, by 1.3 seconds.

Maureen Hall set women's club records in the 500 and 1,000 meters.

... NOTES: The 12th running of the Road Runners Club of America's Women's Festivals in Maryland will begin with the Howard County Striders' 5K at Columbia on July 12 at midnight.
