Fund-raiser nets Burns money for television ads

Former Baltimore Mayor Clarence H. Du Burns and his campaign officials said money raised at a $500-a-plate fund-raiser today will allow then to pay for the television advertising they couldn't afford four years ago.

Allen Quille Sr., Burns' campaign manager, said the breakfast fund-raiser should bring in about $50,000.

Burns is trying to unseat Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke in this year's mayoral campaign. In 1987, Schmoke unseated Burns, who was seeking a full four-year term.

"This did it. This morning should give us the money we need for TV ads," said Quille. He added the television advertising campaign should begin in mid-August.

About 55 people showed up for the breakfast at the Preston Room in midtown. Quille said he was expecting around 70 people to attend the breakfast, but said some people and corporations bought tickets but didn't attend.

Some of those attending included officials from Crown Central Petroleum and Pepsi Cola, representatives from contractors' associations.

Burns expressed satisfaction with the fund-raiser and the kind of financial support he has gotten throughout his campaign, which officially started three months ago.

"We've been able to raise more money in this campaign than we raised the last time," said Burns. The difference between the two campaigns, he added, was Quille, who he described as "having a true gift for raising money."

Quille declined to say how much the campaign as raised in total, saying only that he is pleased with the financial support.

The Schmoke re-election campaign has raised more than $1 million. The mayor formally announced his candidacy during a $20-a ticket gala at the B&O Railroad Museum Sunday night, where more than 5,000 tickets were sold. Schmoke filed for re-election yesterday.

In 1987, Burns needed around $55,000 for a television advertising blitz in the waning weeks of the campaign. But Burns contends that potential contributors were scared away by newspaper polls that showed he was trailing Schmoke by as much as 20 percentage points.

Burns ended up losing to Schmoke by less than 5,500 votes -- a margin of about 2 percentage points. Burns bitterly denounced the polls, saying if he had been able to afford television political advertising, he could have won the election.

Schmoke raised nearly $1 million in the 1987 campaign, outspending Burns by more than 2-1.

Quille said another major fund-raiser is scheduled July 25. It will be a boat ride on the Chesapeake Bay at $60-a ticket.
