James R. Berens has been appointed by Gov. William Donald Schaefer to a three-year term on the board of trustees of Blind Industries and Services of Maryland. Berens is senior vice president and manager of the Baltimore Middle Market Division for Maryland National Bank. First National Bank of Maryland has promoted Patricia A. Douglas to vice president in the bank's Frederick County region, overseeing branch administration and operations. In her 13 years with First National, she has served as a teller, head teller, administrative aide, assistant branch manager and branch manager. Rita Abel, a certified public accountant, has opened Rita Abel Associates P.A., which specializes in privately held and family-run small businesses and start-up companies. Previously she was a manager in the Entrepreneurial Business Services Department at C.W. Amos and Co., a large regional public accounting firm. Westinghouse Electronic Systems Group has appointed James F. Pitts general manager of the Air Force Avionics Division. He will be responsible for providing a variety of electronic systems for such aircraft as the U.S. Air Force's F-16, B-1B, and the Advanced Tactical Fighter. He will also coordinate the integration of emerging advanced technology into Westinghouse's product base and oversee the application of new sensors. Gene Liberati has been appointed vice president of Wilkins Coffee Inc. after retiring from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He was general manager of the commissary at the historic complex. Rob Penfield has become principal associate for RSP Training, a Baltimore company that specializes in management, supervisory and employee skills training. He has 15 years of experience with APC Skills Training & Consulting Co. and with Citicorp. Robert J. Lawless has been named vice president and deputy managing director for the International Group, and Silvia C. King has been appointed senior sensory analyst-corporate research and development for McCormick & Co. Inc. Lawless will retain his position as chairman of the board of McCormick Canada. In the McCormick/Schilling Division, Michael J. Thomas has been promoted to budget manager.


Ed Ladd has been appointed general manager of Marley Station, the Anne Arundel shopping mall. He had been the assistant general manager of Fairlane Town Center, a shopping center outside Detroit. Both centers are managed by the Michigan-based Taubman Co. Ladd has more than 17 years of retail experience.


Steven Haynal has joined Milford Manor Nursing Home in Pikesville as co-administrator. Previously he was an administrator with Beverly Enterprises.


Julie Lynn Sunderland has been promoted to district manager of Mid-Atlantic operations and Martha L. Simons has been named franchise development director for Elegant Images Franchise Corp. The company is the parent of a chain of company-owned and franchised glamour salons operating under the name Elegant Images.Tourism.


Timothy F. Madden has been appointed senior landscape architect at Morris & Ritchie Associates Inc. He comes from KCI Technologies, formerly Kidde Consultants Inc.
