Government Surplus

June 23, 1991

County Executive Robert R. Neall recently announced the countywide distribution of federal government surplus foods for eligible families, Operation Food Sharing.

Rice, applesauce, vegetarian beans, green beans, butter, flour, canned pork, cheese, cornmeal and raisins will be available on Thursday, June 27, at 23 county sites.

Site leaders will present food allotments to people who qualify starting at 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. or until supplies run out.

Families qualify through participation in the following programs: Welfare; Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC); Food Stamps Assistance; Medicaid; the Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP). Families also are eligible if they have income less than 150 percent of Federal poverty guidelines.

People must bring to the site proof of participation -- social security card, food stamp card, Medicaid card, MEAP card, AFDC card, award letters -- and two large grocery bags.

Operation Food Sharing is a joint project coordinated by the county executive's office and the county Food Bank. It relies on the cooperative efforts of volunteers at county Churches and community groups.
