Rev. Herbert R. Compton Sr. Baptist Minister

Services for the Rev. Herbert R. Compton Sr., a Baptist minister for more than 50 years, will be held at 7 p.m. today at New Psalmist Baptist Church, 100 W. Frankiln St.

Mr. Compton died of a heart attack Sunday, a day before his 86th birthday, in his apartment in the 2600 block of Mosher

Street.

A Virginia native, Mr. Compton came to Maryland with his family when he was 9 and was educated in Baltimore public schools. He left school in 1920 and began working as a cook in various country clubs in Ocean City, Atlantic City, N.J., and Long Island, N.Y.

In 1930, he married the former Esther M. Barnes, who died in 1986.

Mr. Compton founded ComptonEmployment Agency in 1946, which he operated out of his home on Carey Street and had branches in Baltimore, Richmond, Va., and New York. He retired from the agency in 1964, and his son, Herbert Compton Jr., closed it in 1971.

In 1951, Mr. Compton was ordained a minister in the Baptist denomination. He later founded Daniel Sanctuary Church, located in the 1200 block of Riggs Avenue until it disbanded in 1964.

Mr. Compton took counseling courses from Hood College, then became an alcohol counselor with the Congress of Racial Equality in 1968.

He worked for a short time as a head copy person and messenger atThe Baltimore Sun in 1968.

He was a member of the NAACP, CORE, the Urban League, the American Newspaper Guild Local 35 and the New Psalmist Baptist Church.

Mr. Compton conducted Bible study in his home, and he frequently shared his faith with prison inmates and shut-ins.

He is survived by two sisters, Marie Lopez of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Florence Lowe of Indianapolis, Ind.; three sons, Herbert R. Compton Jr. of Baltimore, James R. Compton of Atlanta and Johnny O. Compton of Baltimore; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
