ELDERSBURG — A new franchised chain of restaurants owned by the Danbar Corp. has opened The Canopy, a fast-service restaurant, in Peddler's Square on Liberty Road.

Operators Dan and Barbara Carter, longtime Eldersburg residents, opened May 29. The restaurant specializes in open pit beef, ham and turkey, barbecued ribs and chicken, pork, beef and barbecue sandwiches, and homemade soups and salads.

"Most everyone dreams of owning one's own business," said Dan Carter. "Opening The Canopy in Eldersburg is step one in the fulfillmentof our dream."

Dan Carter recently retired after 26 years with Rockland Industries in Baltimore, where he was preparation manager. Hiswife is an agent with the Eldersburg District Office of the Prudential Insurance Co.

"We serve food that's special," said Barbara Carter. "Food you might expect to find at a big family picnic or community bull roast."

The Canopy will seat 88 customers, although the Carters expect to do a strong carry-out business.

The business gets its name from its origins in 1982, when the first open pit beef restaurant served its customers under a canopy tent on Baltimore National Pike in Catonsville, Baltimore County.

A second restaurant opened in Ellicott City, Howard County, in 1985, then a third in Glen Burnie,Anne Arundel County. A fourth licensed restaurant is in Rockville, Montgomery County.

Bill Fink, a longtime Carroll County resident with 16 years experience in the restaurant business, will be The Canopy's manager. Director of marketing will be Dan Baileys, whose experience includes marketing for several major national restaurant chains.

NEW DIRECTOR IS PICKED

FOWBLESBURG -- The Board of Directors of the Farmers and Merchants Bank has announced the election of its newest director, James R. Bosley Jr.

Bosley has been employed by the bank since 1983 and has served as executive vice president for the last five years.

He has a bachelor of science degree in economics and finance from Towson State University. He is a graduate of the Maryland Bankers School and is attending the Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

Bosley will fill the vacancy onthe Board of Directors that was created by the recent passing of Milson C. Raver.

TOP WORKERS AWARDED

WESTMINSTER -- Steve Robertson and Jeff Banz were selected as Employees of the Month for May for the daytime workers and weekend/evening crew, respectively, at Duke's CarWash.

Both employees received a certificate for their achievement.

Other winners for the day crew were: Chris Hann, highest qualitywork; Carroll Logue, most dependable; B.J. Foreman, best attitude; Dino Polignone, most improved worker; and Kristy Lowman, demonstratingthe most initiative.

Weekend/evening winners were: Nikie Will, highest quality work; Brian Grout, most dependable; Mike Esworthy, bestattitude; Mike Trageser, most improved worker; and Tammy Chappell, demonstrating the most initiative.

TOP STUDENT NAMED

WESTMINSTER --The Davis Buick-GMC Truck Third Annual Outstanding Carroll County Career and Technology Center Automotive Student Award was presented to Kevin Lentzer of Finksburg.

Lentzer, a 1991 graduate of Westminster High School, demonstrated mechanical skills, and an enthusiastic interest for an automotive career.

He also had superior grades and attendance, plus participation in community or school affairs.

The Davis company award is presented to honor founders Kay and Ray Hollinger, who were active in the company and community since 1938.
