2 Men Assaulted By Gang Near Lake

A man was stabbed in the stomach and another was kicked repeatedly in the face Saturday during a confrontation with four men at the Columbia lakefront, county police said.

The victims were assaulted about 12:05 a.m. while walking along a pathway near Lake Kittamaqundi, police said. Both men have been treated at area hospitals and released.

Police said the four assailants had been drinking alcohol and creating a disturbance outside the Rouse Co. headquarters along the lakefront when they confronted the two victims.

A fight broke out and one of the victims, Yiannis Vassiliades, 20, of the 10100 block Pasture Gate Lane in Columbia, was knocked to the ground and kicked, police said.

After the fight seemed to have ended and the assailants began to leave, one of the men pulled out a knife and stabbed the second victim, Cyrus Raafat, 20, of the 6200 block Golden Hook in Columbia, police said.

The four men then ran off. Police said no money wastaken.

Vassiliades was treated and released the same day for cutsand bruises at Howard County General Hospital. Raafat was released Sunday from the Maryland Shock Trauma Center at University Hospital inBaltimore.


A Glen Burnie man was stabbed in the arm and hand Saturday by two robbers who jumpedfrom bushes in front of Atholton High School, county police said.

Ralph Simmont, 19, suffered minor stab wounds, was treated at HowardCounty General Hospital and was released, police said. The thieves took about $60 in cash.

Police said Simmont was in front of the school, at 6520 Freetown Road in Columbia, looking for a friend when twomen jumped him shortly before 9:50 p.m. One of the men grabbed his money and threw him to the ground, police said.

The second assailant, armed with a small knife, stabbed the victim in the right arm and right hand, police said.
