George J. Murphy,Chief inspector of city police, dies

Services for retired Baltimore Police Chief Inspector George Joseph Murphy will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Robert C. Altenburg Funeral Home, 6009 Harford Road.

Mr. Murphy, a lifelong Baltimore resident, died after a stroke Sunday at the Charlestown Retirement Community. He was 88.

He attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute for a year before starting to work for the railroad. Mr. Murphy joined the Police Department as a patrolman in 1930 and rose through the ranks to the second-highest job on the force. He retired in 1966.

L Mr. Murphy was active in the Boumi Temple on Charles Street.

He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Embrey Rooks; two sisters, Emma Downey and Marie Collins, both of Baltimore; two daughters, Anne M. Wilson of St. Augustine, Fla., and Marie M. Smith of Galesville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandsons.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, in care of the Boumi Temple, 4900 N. Charles St., Baltimore 21210.
