During the Persian Gulf war, women made up about 6 percent of the combined U.S. forces sent to the gulf. Fourteen women were killed, 21 were wounded and two were taken prisoner while serving under regulations aimed at keeping them out of the posts most likely to be involved in front-line combat. Now Congress is considering repealing laws that limit women's combat roles.
