Big talent eyes big task--saving city schools Profiles

June 14, 1991

Three new names have been added to Baltimore's list of finalists for school superintendent -- former state schools chief David W. Hornbeck, a former Montgomery County schools superintendent, Charles M. Bernardo, and a city associate superintendent, Patsy Baker Blackshear.

Two other finalists -- Lillian Gonzalez, an assistant school superintendent in the District of Columbia, and Walter G. Amprey, an associate superintendent in Baltimore County -- were retained from a short list of candidates selected in April.

Today, The Sun introduces Dr. Blackshear, Mr. Bernardo and Mr. Hornbeck. The other two finalists were profiled in The Sun April 28.

City officials hope to have a new superintendent in place Aug. 1, the day after Dr. Richard C. Hunter's three-year contract expires.
